I Remember Canada Playing the Russians at the Montreal Forum During the Eight Game Summit Series in September 1972, that Pit the Russian National Team Against Canada’s Best NHL Players.

My Dad & I were at the Montreal Forum. . . For The First Game On September 7, 1972 In The Standing Room Only Ramparts . . . Lovingly Called . . . The Seats In The Gods, Or More Crudely – The Nose Bleed Section.

There Wasn’t Enough Room In The Forum To Sneak-In As Much As A Mouse. There was such a Huge Crowd that the Forum Became so Warm & Humid that there was a Fog Across the Ice, which Didn’t Deter the Players, the Fans or the Second-Best Game Ever Played from Playing at Full Clip.

Where We Stood Just Below The Rafters . . . We Stood With Sweaty Naked Chests, Because that’s How Warm the Hockey Rink Had Become – Yet No-One Complained & No-One Left.

It Was So Packed With Screaming Canadians From All Over Canada . . . French, English & Ethics – who Came to Montreal by Car, Rail & Plane to Cheer our Canadian NHL Champions . . . Until Our Throats Went Hoarse.

To Our Great Chagrin . . . Canada Tied the First Game, and After Playing 7-Games (4-In Canada & 3-In Russia) . . . It Came Down to Game-8 in Russia, where Team Canada Entered . . . Winning Four Of Seven Games.

THIS WAS NO LONGER A GAME – THIS WAS FOR THE GLORY OF CANADA:

Either Canada . . . The World Hockey Super-Power at the Time was Going to Win the Series, Or Forever, Canada Would be Compelled to Hold Our Head Down in Shame.

I Won’t Write About The 8th Game In Russia, because that Would Take the Length of a Super-Book. But I What I Will Tell You Is This . . . There Has Never Been a Greater Canadian Sports Drama with Every Metric of Violence on the Playing Field (Ice), with an Equal Amount of Passion & Threats On & Off the Ice with a Determination Beyond What is Normal to Win.

On September 27, 1972 . . . On Game 8 – Canada Stood Still. During the Entire 8-Game Series, Canadians Huddled in Bars, Around Community Television Sets we Brought to Work, Schools, National Canadian Banks and on Radio Broadcasts where Televisions were Not Available.

Every Canadian Watched Or Listened To The Games – Sitting On The Edge Of Our Seats. Even Canadians who were Never Interested in Hockey . . . We Were No Longer Fans Cheering for our Individual Super Stars or the City Teams we Were Loyal-To . . . We Were All Canadians – And Canada Was At War.
