I do not understand why so many people refuse to admit that Yasser Arafat is not interested in concluding a peace deal with Israel. EVER!
It should be as clear as the nose on your face that Arafat’s goal is the destruction of Israel. If there was ever any doubt about that, consider his rejection of Ehud Barak’s offer in 2000.
Ehud Barak, the Prime Minister of Israel, offered Arafat what was considered to be a very generous offer, one that apparently met something like 97% of Palestinian demands.
Instead of coming up with a counter-offer, Arafat rejected Barak and started up his terror machine. If Arafat really wanted to negotiate a deal, wouldn’t he have tendered a counter-offer representing, say, 100% of Palestinian demands? Since he didn’t, could he have smelled a rat?
Was he being set up? What if Israel accepted his counter-offer? After all, if the Israelis offered 97%, they might very well accept a 100% counter-offer. Then, what would Arafat do? Retract his counter-offer and really undermine his international credibility?
Let’s face it, Arafat could not take the risk of an Israeli acceptance. Hence, there was no counter-offer. Seems obvious to me.

I am not criticizing the point of the column, but I do think you omitted one point, which is that Israel too spies on the U.S. for economic, military and political reasons. I do not condemn Israel for that. Israel is literally up “against the wall” besieged on all sides by enemies and has not received the support from this administration, at least overtly, that it should as a strong ally of the U.S
