IN CANADA . . . IT WAS CALLED SUPPLY MANAGEMENT – NICE BENIGN TERM:

Many Years Ago . . . When I Was Campaigning as an Independent Candidate in a National Canadian Election, During the Question & Answer Period of Each Debate, the Same Question was Asked to all the Candidates . . . “Do You Support Supply Management”?

My Answer At The Time Was A Tepid Yes, Not Particularly Because I thought Supply Management was a Great Policy, but Rather, because Many of my Friends were Farmers who Did Extremely Well because of Supply Management.

And I Really Didn’t Give Supply Management a Great Deal of Thought at that Time, since the Number of Farmers in Canada, which in Itself was/is a Small Number Affected by Supply Management was Trivial.

But After the Election, Which I Lost As Usual, since I Couldn’t Get Elected as Dog Catcher when the Only Opponent I would Have to Face would be a Dog . . . I Gave Supply Management A Much Harder Look. Not because of my Regard for the Farmers, But Rather . . . Because Of My Complete Regard For The Consequences Of Supply Management To The Whole Of The Canadian Population.

What I Discovered About Supply Management In Canada, was that the Government Decided Who Could Farm What . . . Specially in Dairy Products (Milk & All Milk Biproducts – Cheese, Ice-cream – Etc), Eggs, Poultry & Pork – Also Etc . . . To the Point that Only APPROVED Farmers were Given Guaranteed Revenue Based upon Their Guaranteed Quotas, Which Negated (Cut-Out) All Competition, which Explained Why Milk for Example was a Fraction of the Price in the United States of America than it was in Canada.

Anne & I Live Near The Canada US Border, where Until the China Virus Set-In, we Did a Great Deal of our Grocery Shopping in the United States of America, where we Saved Significant Money on all Manner of Groceries, which were Not Controlled by the Government.

In Subsequent Debates Against Pro-Government Controlled Farming, it Always Came Down to Several Facts, which I Presented to my Opponents who Always Answered the Exact Same Way . . . Groupthink’s A Bitch.

“Why In Canada Should I Have To Pay 50% More For Milk & Cheese Than I Do In The USA”?

Their Answer was Always the Same . . . “Because Our Milk Is Better & Safer To Drink”. To Which I Always Responded . . . “I Don’t Recall The News Reports Of Americans Dying On The Streets From Dairy Poisoning”.

And To Add Fuel To My Fire . . . I Always Brought up a Reality that Could Neither be Discounted Nor Adversely Debated . . . Amongst so Many Other Food Products, Why should the Price of the Exact Same Cheese, in the Exact Same Packaging Sold in the United States (President Brie Cheese) be Half the Price in America, just Across the Border, Than It Costs In Canada?

I Always Ended My Debate With This . . .

“I Know You Love Your Tractors as Much as I Love Mine”, Since I Too Was a Farmer of Sorts (Gentleman Farmer) . . . Cultivating, Seeding & Fertilizing my Fields while Growing & Harvesting Hay for our Horses.

“But What If You Can’t Buy The Affordable Tractor Of Your Choice & Have To Buy The Tractor The Government Tells You To Buy”? . . .

Even Today – At The Height Of Inflation, It’s Cheaper for Anne & Myself to Live in the United States of America (Florida) Over the Winter than it is to Live in Canada. While Canada is Known as one of the Great Breadbasket Countries of the World.
