As Summer Progresses, there are Fewer & Fewer Canadian Border Crossings into the United States of America. And there are Far More Winter Vacation Plans being Made by Canadians that are Focusing on Europe, the Caribbean and Other Relatively Affordable Safe Places.
The Canadian Snowbird Association Is Promoting Europe & The Caribbean, but Not the United States of America, which is Showing in the Number of Decreased Canadian Flights to America, and Increased Flights to European & Caribbean Destinations.
There Are Many Reasons For This Unexpected Trend, which Includes the Value of the US Dollar Compared to the Value of the Canadian Dollar. The Cost of Travel Insurance, for even Just a Two Week US Getaway for Canadians is Extremely Expensive.
For Anne & Myself, Being in our Mid-Seventies, with Pre-Existing Conditions (Anne Has None. I Am A Diabetic On Several Prescribed Medications) . . . The Cost Of Health Insurance For Us Is Around $15,000 For 6-Months.
Anne & I Buy The Minimum Amount Of Insurance Focused On Health Evac Insurance Back To Canada. At a Certain Age, Many Canadians are Either Denied Insurance Altogether, Or Simply Can’t Afford-It.
There is Also the Worry Surrounding Crime on the Streets of America. The Canadian Media, Very Much Like The American Media Really Dislikes President Trump, and Does all it Can to Dirty-Him-Up by Making His MAGA America Look Violent & Always on the Brink of Exploding.
Then There Is The Trump Trade (Tariff) Effect That Included A Plethora Of Insults To Canada.
Maybe Most Americans Can’t Understand This, or More Likely, Never Gave it Much Thought, but Canadian Feelings Have Been Badly Hurt by Trump’s Anti-Canadian Invectives, Especially Being Ginned-Up By Canada’s Media, which is Openly Anti-Trump & Anti-American Jingoism.
Anne & I, Along with all of our Friends are Not Happy with the Way Trump is Treating Canada. But We Understand Trump’s Business Negotiating Style. He will Threaten, Bully & Insult Whomever He Wants to Get the Better-Of to Acquire What He Wants, Only To Turn Around After The Deal Is Done To Declare No Hard Feelings.
But Nationhood Is Not A Business & There Are Plenty Of Hard Feelings . . . A Country’s Finances Should be Run as a Business, but there is Much More to Running a Country than just Dollars & Cents. And When you Drag Another Country (Your Neighbor & Supposedly Best Friend) through the Dirt to Negotiate, Especially a Country that is as Civil as Canada . . . There Will Be Consequences.
To People Like Anne & Myself . . . Even Though We are also Pissed-Off at Trump’s Rude Treatment of Canada . . . We Can See Beyond The Boorish Rhetoric, which Hasn’t Altered our Views One Iota Towards our Friends & Relatives in America. And Certainly Not About America As A Whole.
Our Worry For The People Of Canada’s Hurt Feelings, is that it Could Very Well be a Long-Term Trend that will Exist, If Not Exacerbated, for a Considerable Amount of Time, Given That In My Lifetime, We Have Never Been At A Juncture Anything Like This.

PLUS . . . the New Requirements for Canadians who Wish to Spend their Entire Winter (More than 30-Days) in the United States of America . . . Anne & I Were Only Too Happy To Do Otherwise.
We Renewed Our RV Reservation & Were Happy To Pay The Deposit.
A Decade Ago, Anne & I jumped Through FBI (Homeland Security) & RCMP Hoops to Earn our NEXUS Cards, which Designates Card Holders as America’s Most Trusted Travelers.
During COVID, It Was Time To Renew The 5-Year NEXUS Commitment Or Not. We Didn’t Hesitate & Showed-Up at a Joint Customs (USA & Canada) Interview at Champlain New York to Re-Qualify, Which We Did.
The Time To Renew Has Arrived, which Created a Bit of a Conundrum for Anne & Myself. What do we Need NEXUS Cards for, if in Trump’s New Immigration Policy, NEXUS Card Holders Are No Longer Most Trusted Travelers, When A Canadian Passport Would Be All We Need?
The Other Issue Was Cost . . . The NEXUS Cards Used to Cost $50 Each USD. But Now, They Are $120 Each USD, which with the Exchange Rate, Made the Total Cost of the Two Cards for Anne & Myself in Canadian Dollars – Slightly Under $350 CDN, Which For Anne & Myself, Given Rising Costs All Around-Us . . . Is A Lot Of Money.
We Thought About It . . . And as Much as it Seemed Foolish for us to be Spending The $350 When A Passport Would Suffice, we Both Agreed that the Moniker of Most Trusted Traveler to the United States of America Would be Worth Paying-For, Since Maybe Soon, The Most Trusted Traveler Would Once Again Have Real Meaning.
In The Meantime, Our Support For America, MAGA & Donald Trump Stands Steadfast.

Conservatives in the USA detest Obummer who shipped off 10 billion to Iran. Nothing was ever done to that evil president that sent our tax dollars to a terrorist regime. I do not believe for a second that the wool can be pulled over the eyes of President Trump. Hegseth has said the military is ready to fight alongside our ally, Israel anytime the President gives the word.
In response to Shelley’s comment– It was not US tax dollars but a combination of $1.7 billion in cash & access to previously frozen Iranian assets worth up to $150 billion, as Iran’s own funds had been frozen in international banks due to sanctions. These funds were unfrozen as part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit its nuclear program. Thing is, those funds were likely then used to buy what was needed to make them eventually anyway–where we are today.
It will be a complete surprise when the bunker busters blow up the mullah’s prized nuclear bomb dream hole. Trump will make out like it won’t happen only til he finally tires of their lies.
Canada has done nothing to deserve Trump and America’s support. Canada supports Hamas through the United Nations. We don’t pay our share of defence expenditures and have virtually no defences ourselves. We have let our oil and gas industries go to waste and we support DEI and Woke – both negative ideologies that damage countries. On a religious basis we do not check Muslim immigrants to see if they believe in jihad, we let our Christian religion lapse and have become an anti-semitic.
Jonathan couldn’t have said it better! There are valid reasons not to travel to the US, high rate of exchange is not one of them. The C$ is actually stronger today than it has been in many months. I will need way more than 500 characters to list all the reasons why the C$ is weak, economy, politics & high taxes is a good beginning. For Canadians to blame not coming to the US due to a weak C$, is disingenuous, it has always been expensive for Canadians, truth is, now it’s politics!
Howard. Your staunch support of Trump and the U.S. is commendable. We have many relatives in Canada; they hate Trump. While we love many things about Canada, it is sad to see the extreme liberalism of your country’s leaders. It seems to be very similar to our great divide here in the U.S. Praying that Trump will be another Sir Winston Churchill and that relations between Canada/U.S. will improve and be strong once again.
To Karen McKim-Altman and Howard: Just so you know, I am Canadian and I do NOT hate President Trump. I actually like him and think he is a very smart guy! True, I got annoyed at Donald Trump’s tariffs on us and wanting Canada to become the 51st State. I have always been a supporter of Donald Trump ever since he entered politics. Donald always told it like it is. I believe Americans and Candians like (or love) each other and we have a trememdous bond between us !!!

As a Canadian, I feel very lucky to have the United States as our neighbour. In fact, the feeling is mutual, and our family still plans to visit NYC next month: Times Square, Broadway Plays, Great Restaurants & Shopping, etc….Donald Trump is the right leader for U.S.A. though I don’t agree with everything he says or does. I prefer “The Donald” to Canada’s PM Carney, that’s for sure. I voted for Poilievre.
Well, I reckon you have your answer on the Churchill ponder. As to the tourism issue, it appears that Canada’s tourism from the US has seen a marked decline too. Much of which will not impact my positive affections towards Canadian people one iota. Except your coastal leftys, like ours, they still suck. Vote Pierre Poliever the next go around!!!!
