Trump does not want a communist government as a neighbor. U said yourself USA milk, cheese, butter, & other things have a high tariff while Canadian products have 0 tariff on the US side. I agree tariff for tariff. Fair/expected. I hope the Canadien citizen recognizes that the BS Trudum party & rule has almost put Canada dwn for the count of being a freedom loving country (referring to the trucker’s protests, etc.). There r many things Canada can do to regain the old status. I hope they do it.
Interesting article, I was not aware the Premier can’t demand outside the Canadian border. The thing about President Trump that Ford doesn’t seem to be aware of is this; Trump wrote the Art of the Deal, there is always more to his statements than people realize. Good article Howard. With Canada and Mexico, Trump wants fair trade and more skin in the game. When was the last time you saw Mexico fight global terrorism? They sure love being our neighbors. Unlike the sorry ass Irish I witnessed today, be sincere in who you are! The Trump train has left the station and many have been left at the station without a ticket. I wish negations/relations with Canada were much better but reality is Trump will take no prisoners in his global quest.
As for fentanyl from Canada, look up Sam Cooper, a Canadian journalist who wrote a book on Chinese political influence and fentanyl factories in Vancouver. Canada is guilty of much.

Donald Trump’s vision and goal is to wean America off of foreign goods. The tariffs are intended to make America more self-sufficient. By bringing manufacturing and industry back to America such as aluminum production there will be an increase in countless jobs. America is fully capable of increasing its domestic farming and lumber outputs as well. Canadians will miss American goods far more than Americans will miss those from Canada. But no one will miss Rosie O’Donnell.
I agree and disagree. Trump is not to be trusted. His word means nothing. A trade agreement was made with 45 two administrations ago. He feels he is not bound by it. Thus his attack. Also , Mr. Ford originally planned to cut of power in retaliation to tariffs instead he came up with a surcharge. He did not fold, just using suspending it for now. Other than that closing the border and trimming the fat and corruption is the way to go.
IMO President Trump is not doing us any favours , especially out of the goodness of his heart. A so called business genius does not tear up a USMCA agreement that he signed , while bragging about it. Good business people honour their agreements. If you need to renegotiate then come to the table like a big boy. He’s totally going about this the wrong way and is acting like a bully instead of a leader. Ps : in 2024 American dairy farmers paid zero tariffs to Canada. More research needed.
Tariffs are just leverage for fair trade–Reciprocal tariffs are imminently fair! Trump is just searching for “balance” in dealing with the world and forcing reevaluation by using them.
Howard, I see that your editorial touched some nerves yesterday, your Canadian readers are running to the flag, the way I expect them to do. However, to be fair, the U.S. has been treated unfairly by many nations for too many years, and I think the idea of “you pay us what we pay you” is fair and the right way to go about it, unless of course those countries are willing to remove their own tariffs, especially the E.U.
I am not convinced that President Trump initiated the tariff dispute between our two countries. After reading the following article, which lists 25% tariffs on the many products America ships to Canada, I think that trade negotiations definitely broke down. A good leader voted in to office in Canada will likely result in better relations between our two countries.
What does Trump want? Use your imagination. Trump is always thinking 30 to 50 years ahead. When he mentions something, i.e., Gaza, Panama, Canada, Greenland, etc. his mind is “light-years” ahead of us mortals. This is why he has been, and is, so successful.
How does a population of 40 Million buy as much as a population of 340 Million, to have EQUAL trade? Randy Weins (Alberta) took the words right out of my mouth. I, too, was a big supporter of Donald Trump and was glad he defeated Kamala Harris last November. Did President Trump turn ROGUE ? Our family used to grow up watching GUNSMOKE on TV. Imagine if our hero Marshal Dillon decided to take bribes from saloons and permit certain outlaws to steal money from the bank. And if Doc or Chester or Kitty complained, Dillon would tell them to get out of Dodge.
Trump is not hard to understand. He’s very intelligent and indeed thinks ahead of most of us.
