Who’s The Moron Now?

One day, the Americans are going to say enough is enough, and tell us Canadian freeloaders where to get off. Even now, the Americans are calling the British and the Australians their best friends. And why not?

According to the Canadian genius, Françoise Ducros, President George W Bush is a MORON. And she let the whole world know that at yesterday’s NATO meeting in the Czech Republic.

For those of you who do not know who Ducros is, she is Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s chief communication’s advisor and sometimes “spokesperson”. Does he ever know how to pick them.

So who’s the MORON?

Canada lives and breathes courtesy of the USA. We can afford to be smug about all of our social services (which aren’t all that great), because we don’t have to spend the billions of dollars necessary in military defense. And through the good graces of the USA, Canada has a remarkably disproportional share of the Free Trade Agreement, including the auto industry.

What Canada earns from the USA, is what keeps our motor running. And I can’t even begin to list the number and types of products and services we sell to the USA, which earn the hundreds of billions of dollars from the Americans every year.

Since the days of Pierre Elliott Trudeau (and before), our politicians have made USA bashing a political science. Our teachers have made USA bashing part of the unwritten curriculum. And our media take enormous pleasure in finding more and more creative ways to show America’s underbelly.

One day, the Americans are going to say enough is enough, and tell us Canadian freeloaders where to get off. Even now, the Americans are calling the British and the Australians their best friends. And why not?

It took Canada forever to decide on an appropriate response to 9/11. It took the British and the Australians only seconds. As a matter of fact, Britain’s Prime Minister Tony Blair, couldn’t get to Washington fast enough after 9/11, just to stand shoulder to shoulder with the American people. He said as much in those very words.

Françoise Ducros was right when she uttered her MORON remark. Where she was wrong, was at whom she directed it.
