In the National Post, October 22, 2001, the political cartoonist illustrated a US soldier dressed in full battle gear overburdened by multiple pack-sacks depicting Saudi Arabia, Kashmir, Iraq and Israel.
To lump Israel into this burden, along with those despotic states is both insulting and dishonest. I would remind the cartoonist that Israel is not only, the only democracy in the entire region, but; it is also the absolutely singular loyal and reliable ally the USA and the West has in the entire Middle East.
More than that, Israel is the only ally the Americans have in hot-spots, not only in the Middle East, but just about everywhere else in the world where American troops are neither posted, nor expected to fight.
To suggest that Israel should be lumped in with these bad actors, is to suggest two things. First; that Israel is somehow just like them. Second; that Israel is somehow the reason for all the trouble the world is facing from mostly fundamentalist Islamic Arabs.
In reality, Israel far more resembles the West than it does its neighbors, and that is the primary reason why the Arabs focus their hatred on Israel.
Perhaps, if Israel would better reflect their neighbors and be more backward and less democratic, then, there would probably be less hostility.
But; because Israel is a Middle Eastern reflection of the USA, the cartoon should actually depict an Israeli soldier overburdened with a pack-sack that says American Democratic Western Values.
